Glossary of Terms:VoIP (Voice over Internet protocol)VoIP services convert your voice into a digital signal that travels over the Internet. If you are calling a regular phone number, the signal is converted to a regular telephone signal before it reaches the destination. VoIP can allow you to make a call directly from a computer, a special VoIP phone, or a traditional phone connected to a special adapter. In addition, wireless "hot spots" in locations such as airports, parks, and cafes allow you to connect to the Internet and may enable you to use VoIP service wirelessly. CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access)CDMA consistently provides better capacity for voice and data communications than other commercial mobile technologies, allowing more subscribers to connect at any given time, and it is the common platform on which 3G technologies are built. CDMA is a "spread spectrum" technology, allowing many users to occupy the same time and frequency allocations in a given band/space. As its name implies, CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) assigns unique codes to each communication to differentiate it from others in the same spectrum. In a world of finite spectrum resources, CDMA enables many more people to share the airwaves at the same time than do alternative technologies. WiMaxWiMax is a standards-based technology enabling the delivery of last mile wireless broadband access as an alternative to wired broadband like cable and DSL. WiMAX provides fixed, nomadic, and portable and, soon, mobile wireless broadband connectivity without the need for direct line-of-sight with a base station. Broadband internet servicesBroadband internet services: large capacity networks that are able to carry several services including data, voice and video all at the same time. Mobile wireless serviceMobile wireless service is the transmission through the air from a base station to a moving device such as a cellular telephone, PDA or Blackberry. Fixed wireless serviceFixed wireless service is the operation of wireless devices in a fixed location like a home or office.
